About MA Mariela Kiselkova

While I was doing my BA in I’ve worked as an assistant in a fashion photography studio for 3 years in Bulgaria (2003-2006). My main duties were woking with studio lights and equipment, middle format Mamiya, digital Canon camera, photo retouching and graphic design.
Then I started a free-lance career as a commercial photographer. I was shooting photo-sessions for different life-style magazines as the Max, the Elle, the Playboy and other local brands, image photography for singers and artists, as well as advertising photography.
Recently I’ve graduated my MA in Documentary Photography and Photojournalism in the University of the Arts London (2012).

I was born during the communist regime somewhere in eastern europe, and still live there though most of the communist stuff is gone in cellars, antique shops and museums. As everyone from my generation I was taught that if I study some kind of economics in any university I won’t have to work and will be very successful. After four years of doing a BA in International tourism I realised that this doesn’t mean that you won’t have to get up early and go to some annoying office doing nothing. So, bored and irritated by my colleagues, I started to deal with the graphic design of the advertising materials for the company I was working for. And realised this is what I want to do for living. And left the economic studies almost graduated for a new BA in Applied and Motion Graphics. There I attended a few courses in photography and thought—I love it, I want to do this too. And after almost 10 years spent in advertising agencies or in front of any glowing screens doing freelance work, trying to be creative even when I’m not expected to, with a few fashion magazines’ covers shooted and some dozens of models immortalised for a month in the inner pages or ad campaigns, I ended up somewhere in South London hoping to find the true meaning of visual arts.
For now the answer is even more abstract than 42. But meanwhile I produced the true meaning of my life. My career split between personal projects, commercial work, being a mother, amateur snowboarder and contemporary superhero.
